Randy Lyght, A Return to Romance

Thunder Bay native, and Jazz Crooner, Randy Lyght

This past February, while researching music and events for a Valentine's Day article, I came across Randy Lyght. Randy was headlining a fundraiser for The Heart and Stroke Foundation, his charitable passion. Born in ThunderBay, currently based out of Kitchener, Randy has been in the music industry for more than thirty years now. After taking a break from show biz to raise his family, Randy returned to recording in the early part of this decade. A Return to Romance is Randy's latest compilation and I was fortunate enough to have a copy land on my desk!

A Return to Romance is a carefully chosen selection of Jazz standards. Lovingly arranged by Andriy Tykhonov, who also plays keys on the recording, Randy croons and takes you back to a very romantic era. Clark Johnson (bass) , Joel Haynes (drums), Ken Hadley (flute) and JK Gulley (guitar) accompany Randy Lyght with care and emotion.

The songs are a who's who of romantic standards. The Best Is Yet To Come, It Had To Be You (a personal favourite) I've Got You Under My Skin, and more.  La Vie En Rose is a sweet rendition, just a little bit sultry. The addition of Nature Boy is a welcome surprise, I do not know why this song is not interpreted more often. I found the CD to be soft yet smooth. It would be the perfect accompaniment to a romantic dinner, or to have filling your home as your guests arrive for a dinner party. Not a single song disappoints, and there are no surprises to throw you off. Just warm memories of a less complicated time, when romance meant something!

Sometimes all it take is a look, a touch or smile to return to romance,
There is a tendency to forget how important that element is to our relationship as the years pass on,
Songs of love that make you laugh, bring a tear to your eye or help you remember a special moment.
a return to romance can be extravagant or as simple as a kiss or a single rose
